A litter of four cute terrier mix puppies recently underwent a challenge of a lifetime after they were diagnosed with Canine Parvovirus (CPV). CPV is highly contagious and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces. Vaccines can prevent this infection, but mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases.
After being transferred to Gulf Coast Humane Society, the puppies in the litter were named Darby, Davy, Dylan and Duff. They were infected before their transfer, and unfortunately Dylan and Davy fell severely ill.
The two brothers needed specialty care and were transferred to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital, which is a comprehensive specialty veterinarian hospital. There, each of Dylan and Davy received the best care. Meanwhile, Darby and Duff's cases were not as serious and were treated for CPV at GCHS by our highly-trained staff.
Two other puppies, Dax and Ava, contracted CPV and also were treated successfully at GCHS. After nearly two weeks of intensive care, Dylan and Davy's condition improved and eventually were transferred back to GCHS. During this time, one of GCHS' shelter dogs, Chico, was treated at Blue Pearl after suffering post-surgical complications not related to the CPV cases.
At GCHS, we will take every precaution and provide the best care of every shelter animal. The Second Chance Fund provides the perfect tool to pay for the medical costs incurred like the treatments for Parvovirus. The fund is 100-percent raised through donations.
By the end of these poor puppies' ordeals, the final cost came to over $12,000. But at GCHS, we know it is all worth it. It all paid off as each of Darby and Duff were adopted Sept. 21, with Dylan and Davy still waiting their turn.
Fortunately for all these sweet shelter pets, the Parvovirus did not win and they also had the Second Chance Fund in their corner.
The Second Chance Fund is the shelter animal's last and BEST chance at a happy and healthy life.!
